We have a replica of the Alamo in Old Town. It was built a few years ago as a Mexican restaurant and the facade was supposed to have been the size of the Alamo. Unfortunately, shortly after it was built, the restaurant closed due to tax issues. The building sat unused.
After a lengthy neighborhood battle, the "alamo" is now being remodeled as a church. The big issue in that neighborhood was that it is close to the entertainment district in Old Town, and there was concern that the church would lobby against the local bars. (There are local ordinances about distances between drinking establishments and churches.) The church signed off on that issue, and work is now proceeding.
The ironic part to the whole story is that the closest bar, The Temple Club, was originally . . . a church.
